What is Digital Forensics ?

Digital forensic science is a subfield of forensic science that focuses on the recovery and evaluation of data related to crimes from digital devices. Digital forensics and computer forensics were once synonymous. Since then, it has grown to include any device that can store digital data. Although both the Florida computer law and the first recorded computer crime occurred in 1978, it was not until the 1990s that the term “computer crime” gained popular usage. At the turn of the 21st century, national policies regarding digital forensics emerged.

Identification, preservation, analysis, and documentation of digital evidence comprise digital forensics. This is done when required to present evidence in court.

How is digital forensics applied in a case?

A person’s digital footprint comprises information such as the websites they have visited, their activity levels, and the gadgets they have utilised. By tracing digital footprints, the investigator will gather the necessary knowledge to solve the crime. Several instances, such as those involving Matt Baker (2010) and Krenar Lusha (2009), have been resolved using digital forensics.

Cyber forensics investigators are competent at decrypting data using a variety of programmes and methods. According to the type of cybercrime under investigation, investigators employ a variety of novel tactics. Cyber investigators are responsible for finding the source of a security breach and recovering any lost data. The information is then archived and translated so it can be presented in court or utilised by the police for further investigation. A case study on cold cases and computer forensics can help individuals appreciate the importance of the field in relation to criminal offences.
